Eggenberg Palace

Schloss Eggenberg

Eggenberg Palace is the Baroque residence of the Eggenberg family in the west of Graz, begun in 1625 and run by the Universalmuseum Joanneum, with its state rooms, landscaped park and three museums.

Why go

The Universalmuseum Joanneum runs Schloss Eggenberg and describes its circle of 24 state rooms, with original 17th- and 18th-century decoration and more than 500 ceiling paintings, centred on the Planetary Room. Its palace page says the state rooms can be visited only on a guided tour, and that the palace stands in a large landscaped garden of the Romantic period. The Alte Galerie, the Archaeology Museum and the Coin Cabinet are also in the palace. Graz Tourismus says Prince Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg commissioned it from 1625 as an architectural allegory of the universe. The Austrian Commission for UNESCO lists the palace with the historic centre of Graz as one World Heritage site, extended to Eggenberg in 2010. This record is the palace, not its park as a separate record and not the Natura 2000 designation.
