Graz Clock Tower

Grazer Uhrturm

The Clock Tower (Uhrturm) is the former fortress tower on the Schlossberg above Graz's old town, with a wooden gallery, three bells and a clock whose large hands show the hours.

Why go

Graz Tourismus says a tower on this spot of the Schlossberg was first mentioned in the 13th century and took its present shape around 1560, when the fortress was rebuilt, including the wooden gallery once used by the fire watch. The clockwork made by Michael Sylvester Funck in 1712 still runs, driven electrically since the mid-20th century, and the hands are swapped: the large hand shows the hours and the small one the minutes. Three bells hang on it; a bell of 1385 strikes the hours. The board's page says the interior is open only on an official Schlossberg guided tour and on the summer-holiday days it lists there. This record is the tower, not the Schlossberg park or the funicular and lift that climb the hill.
