Kunsthaus Graz

Kunsthaus Graz is the Universalmuseum Joanneum's house for international contemporary art on Lendkai in Graz, a biomorphic building by Peter Cook and Colin Fournier built for the European Capital of Culture 2003.

Why go

The Universalmuseum Joanneum runs Kunsthaus Graz as its house for international contemporary art, showing changing exhibitions. Its architecture page says Peter Cook and Colin Fournier designed it for the European Capital of Culture programme of 2003, on a lot between Lendkai and Mariahilferstraße opposite the historic centre, joined to the 'Eiserne Haus', a department store of 1846-48 whose listed façade was kept; Fournier called it the 'Friendly Alien'. Its architecture page says that in the evening the building communicates with its surroundings through the BIX media façade designed by realities:united. Graz Tourismus adds that a 40-metre glass gallery, the 'Needle', serves as a viewing platform. This record is the exhibition house, not the Joanneum as a whole.
