Schlossberg Graz
Schloßberg
The Schlossberg is the wooded hill above Graz's old town, the site of a former fortress, laid out as a public park with the Clock Tower, the Bell Tower and the remains of the fortifications.
Why go
Graz Tourismus says a small fort on this rock gave Graz its name and was extended after 1544 into a Renaissance fortress that Napoleon's forces could not capture; after Graz surrendered in 1809 the fortifications were razed except the Clock Tower and the Bell Tower, which the citizens of Graz ransomed. About thirty years later Baron Welden turned the hill into the park it is today. On top the board lists the Bell Tower with the bell 'Liesl', the Kasematten stage, the Gothic gate, the cistern and the Turkish Well, the Graz Museum Schlossberg and the Herbersteingarten, with a tunnel system inside the hill. It names four ways up: the Schlossbergbahn funicular from Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Kai, the lift from Schlossbergplatz, the Felsensteig steps and paths from Karmeliterplatz. This record is the hill park, not the Clock Tower record and not the protected-area designation.
