El Retiro Park

Parque del Retiro · Parque del Buen Retiro

El Retiro Park (Parque del Buen Retiro) is a historic city park of over 125 hectares in central Madrid, with gardens, monuments and a large artificial lake.

Why go

Madrid's city tourism site describes El Retiro as covering over 125 hectares with more than 15,000 trees, a large artificial lake where rowing boats can be rented, the Monument to Alfonso XII and gardens including the Rosaleda rose garden. It says that on 25 July 2021 El Retiro and the Paseo del Prado, together called the Landscape of Light, were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site; that designation covers the wider area and is not this record. The Palacio de Velázquez and the Palacio de Cristal inside the park are exhibition spaces of the Museo Reina Sofía and are separate places. The same site says El Retiro may close in severe weather, and that screens beside the park's accesses announce a full or partial closure.
