Museo Arqueológico Nacional
The National Archaeological Museum (Museo Arqueológico Nacional) is a public museum of archaeology founded in 1867, at Calle Serrano 13 in Madrid.
Why go
The museum's history page says Queen Isabella II founded the Museo Arqueológico Nacional in 1867 to bring together collections of antiquities then scattered across different institutions, to present the history of Spain from its origins and the ancient civilisations of the rest of the world. Its seat is the Palacio de Biblioteca y Museos Nacionales, a building conceived in 1860 and completed in 1892; from 1867 to 1893 the museum was housed provisionally in the Casino de la Reina. The museum describes itself as a public institution interpreting objects of the peoples of present-day Spain and the Mediterranean world from antiquity to recent times, and says it reopened in 2014 after a thorough renovation. Its pages are published by Spain's Ministry of Culture.
