Fraumünster

The Fraumünster is a Reformed church at Münsterhof in Zurich's Old Town, the former church of a women's abbey, with stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall and Augusto Giacometti.

Why go

The Reformed parish of Zurich describes the Fraumünster as a Romanesque-Gothic building that grew out of a former women's convent led by influential abbesses until 500 years ago, and its visit page says Abbess Katharina von Zimmern handed the Fraumünster over to the city, which the parish credits with making a Reformation without civil war possible, and that her act was honoured in a jubilee year in 2024. The parish charges an entry and information fee for tourist visits, sold only on site with no online advance sales, while entry for reflection and prayer is free; the fee includes an audio guide app or an illustrated leaflet. A crypt museum with the oldest remains of the abbey and a multimedia exhibition keeps the same opening times as the church. Photography without flash or tripod is allowed for private purposes outside services, and the parish notes that the Chagall windows are protected by copyright. This record is the church, not the guild society or the post office of the same name.
