National Museum Zurich (Landesmuseum Zürich)

Landesmuseum Zürich

The National Museum Zurich (Landesmuseum Zürich) is the Zurich museum of the Swiss National Museum, beside Zurich's main railway station; it opened in 1898 in a building designed by Gustav Gull, and an extension opened in 2016.

Why go

The museum belongs to the Swiss National Museum, which its organisation page describes as a public-law institution under the federal law on the museums and collections of the Swiss Confederation, bringing together the National Museum Zurich, the Château de Prangins, the Forum of Swiss History Schwyz and a collections centre in Affoltern am Albis, and showing the history of Switzerland from its beginnings to the present day. Its history page says the Federal Council opened the museum on 24 June 1898 in a building designed by Gustav Gull, and that an extension by the architects Christ & Gantenbein opened in 2016. The museum's tickets page sells tickets online and says reservations for public tours are made online under the tour concerned, while private groups book through its Reservation Desk. Its visitor information page asks visitors to leave larger bags in the cloakroom lockers and says luggage too large for the lockers cannot be left at the museum. This record is the museum (Wikidata Q691896), not its building, which Wikidata keeps as a separate item (Q39595754).
