Galleria Borghese
Galleria Borghese
The Galleria Borghese is the state art museum in the Villa Borghese park in Rome, holding the Borghese family's collection of sculpture and painting.
Why go
The Galleria Borghese grew from the collection that Cardinal Scipione Borghese, nephew of Pope Paul V, began in the 17th century, according to Rome's official tourism site, which says the gallery, the Borghese estate and its grounds have belonged to the Italian state since 1902. The same site lists sculptures by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, among them Apollo and Daphne and the Rape of Proserpina, Canova's marble of Pauline Bonaparte Borghese, and paintings by Raphael, Titian and Caravaggio. This record is the museum; the Villa Borghese park around it is a separate place. The gallery's own website could not be opened for this record, so its booking and entry rules are not given here: check them with the gallery before you go.
