Why go

The Granada Charterhouse, the Monasterio de la Cartuja, also called the monastery of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, is a Carthusian monastery in Granada. The Archdiocese of Granada's ticket site says monks from El Paular arrived at the end of 1514, that building restarted in 1516 to designs by Fray Alonso de Ledesma and went on for three centuries, that monks lived there until 1835 and that the cloister and the monks' cells were destroyed in 1842. The same page describes the church, the sacristy with its stucco decoration, the refectory with canvases by Sánchez Cotán on the origins of the Carthusian order, and the lay brothers' chapter house. Tickets are sold on Tickets Granada Cristiana, the Archdiocese's official ticket site; its monastery page says cultural visits run all year except during worship and other religious celebrations and asks visitors to confirm hours beforehand. The same page says tourist visits are not allowed inside the church during liturgical acts, and that photographs are allowed without flash, lights, tripods or selfie sticks.
