Scavi archeologici di Ercolano · Ercolano

Herculaneum is the excavated Roman town buried in the eruption of AD 79, in the comune of Ercolano in Campania, run by the Parco Archeologico di Ercolano.

Why go

Herculaneum is the archaeological site of the Roman town buried in the AD 79 eruption, inside the modern town of Ercolano rather than in Naples. It is run by the Parco Archeologico di Ercolano, part of the Ministry of Culture; the Archaeological Park of Pompeii's about-us page says Herculaneum became a park independent of Pompeii in 2017. The park's tickets page says the ticket is shown at the entrance on a phone or tablet as a QR code or printed, and kept for registration at the turnstile, and that its closing times refer to the park gates on Corso Resina and Via dei Papiri Ercolanesi. The same page, read on 9 October 2026, says the Villa dei Papiri and the ancient theatre are closed for works with no reopening date set. This record's map point is a point inside the excavation area, not either gate.
