Vesuvio

Mount Vesuvius is the active stratovolcano on the Gulf of Naples in Campania, protected by the Vesuvius National Park, whose Gran Cono path leads to the crater.

Why go

Mount Vesuvius is an active stratovolcano on the Gulf of Naples, in the Metropolitan City of Naples; the Vesuvius National Park around it was established on 5 June 1995, according to the park's home page. The park's page for path no. 5, Il Gran Cono, says the crater path starts at the Piazzale at about 1,000 m in the comune of Ercolano, at the end of the Ercolano-Vesuvio provincial road, and that the crater is entered only by pre-purchased online ticket, through the automatic gate there or through a second gate at Ottaviano that is being activated. The same page names vesuviopark.vivaticket.it as the only authorised ticket seller, says the ticket office and the path close automatically on days when the regional civil protection issues a weather alert of orange level or higher, and says groups above 1,000 m are accompanied by the Presidio Permanente Vulcano Vesuvio. This record is the volcano, not the park, and its map point is the summit, which stands for the mountain and is not the start of the crater path.
