Hohenklingen Castle
Burg Hohenklingen
Hohenklingen Castle (Burg Hohenklingen) is a medieval hilltop castle above the old town of Stein am Rhein in the canton of Schaffhausen.
Why go
The Historical Dictionary of Switzerland says the lords of Klingen, who lived in their castle above Stein am Rhein, sat at Hohenklingen as advocates (Vögte) of the monastery of St. Georgen and of the town into the 15th century, sold their rights and property in Stein to the lords of Klingenberg in 1419 and 1433, and that the town bought that property in 1457. It also records archaeological finds from excavations during the castle's restoration in 2005 to 2007. Schaffhauserland Tourism describes the castle as sitting high above the old town, with views over the Hegau, Lake Constance and the Rhine landscape. XTOUR has not confirmed who runs the castle today or how a visit works. This record is the castle in Stein am Rhein, not the archaeological castle-hill item, and Schaffhausen is a base for it, not its container.
