Museum zu Allerheiligen

The Museum zu Allerheiligen is the City of Schaffhausen's museum of archaeology, history, art and natural history, housed in the former Benedictine monastery of All Saints in the old town.

Why go

The museum's about page says it is run by the City of Schaffhausen, with further funding from the canton, foundations, associations and sponsors, and that the city installed it in stages between 1921 and 1938 in the former monastery complex, which goes back to the 11th century; the city's own portrait dates the monastery's founding to 1049. The museum says its art collection runs from the 15th century to contemporary art, and that the archaeological collection of the industrialist Marcel Ebnöther, which reached the museum in 1991, is shown as a juxtaposition of the 'Old World' and the 'New World'. Its natural history collections were brought into the complex in the 1980s, it says, after the city's separate natural history museum was destroyed in the mistaken American bombing of Schaffhausen on 1 April 1944. The herb garden, laid out in 1937 and 1938 where the monastery's garden had been, is freely accessible in the daytime, according to the same page. This record is the museum at Klosterstrasse 16, not the Romanesque church that also belongs to the monastery complex.
