The paintings are faded and hard to read, so this is a church for people already drawn to Svan art. Two things set it apart. The Jonah episode, the national tourism administration notes, is found only here among Georgia's churches, and the plan wraps a semi-open aisle around the nave to end in its own eastern apse. The church once held a notable treasury and was robbed repeatedly; recovered pieces, among them icons of Saint George and Saint Theodore and an Italian cross, are now kept in the Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography in Mestia, the natural second stop.
