Imperial Crypt
Kapuzinergruft · Kaisergruft
The Imperial Crypt (Kaisergruft, also Kapuzinergruft) is the burial vault of the House of Habsburg beneath the Capuchin church and monastery on Neuer Markt in Vienna's Innere Stadt.
Why go
The Imperial Crypt is the Habsburg family burial vault beneath the church and monastery of the Capuchin friars on Neuer Markt; the crypt's own site says it has served this purpose since 1618 and remains in the Capuchin Order's custody. The crypt says extensions over four centuries created ten vaults holding the sarcophagi, urns and funerary monuments of the Habsburgs, among them 12 emperors and 22 empresses and queens, and that 150 members of the family rest there. It gives its address as Tegetthoffstraße 2, Neuer Markt, 1010 Vienna. Its visit page (in German) links to online booking ('Jetzt Besuch buchen') and lists guided tours, and says that on All Saints' and All Souls' Day, kept as quiet visiting days, no group bookings are taken. This record is the crypt, not the Capuchin Church above it.
