State Hall of the Austrian National Library

Prunksaal der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek

The State Hall (Prunksaal) is the 18th-century hall of the former Court Library on Josefsplatz in Vienna, shown to visitors by the Austrian National Library as one of its museums.

Why go

The State Hall belongs to the Austrian National Library (Österreichische Nationalbibliothek), which lists it among its museums and gives its address as Josefsplatz 1. The library's State Hall page says the hall was built in the 18th century as part of the former Court Library, is almost 80 metres long and 20 metres high, has an elaborately decorated dome and frescoes, four Venetian globes more than a metre across and around 200,000 historical books, and that its Baroque interior was restored from July to December 2022. The same page announces days when the hall closes early for events, and offers audioguides in eight languages. This record is the hall, not the library as an institution and not the Hofburg complex.
