Königssee
Königssee
The Königssee is a mountain lake inside Berchtesgaden National Park, in the municipality of Schönau am Königssee in the Berchtesgadener Land district of Bavaria.
Why go
The Königssee is a lake inside Berchtesgaden National Park; the national park administration describes it as more than 190 metres deep and nutrient-poor, with all its inflows coming from unpopulated mountain areas. Passenger boats on the lake are run by the Bayerische Seenschifffahrt, whose page says the pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomä on the shore can be reached only by water. The national park runs an information point with an exhibition at St. Bartholomä on the Hirschau peninsula. The park's behaviour rules prohibit air mattresses, rubber boats and other buoyancy aids, as well as camping, and say rangers monitor compliance and fines are imposed for violations. This record is the lake, not the national park or the church on its shore.
