Viktualienmarkt

Viktualienmarkt

The Viktualienmarkt is the permanent food market in Munich's old town near Marienplatz, run by the city's Märkte München, where more than 100 traders sell on 18,591 square metres.

Why go

Märkte München, the City of Munich's municipal markets enterprise, runs the Viktualienmarkt as one of its four permanent food markets and says more than 100 traders sell fruit, vegetables, meat, game, poultry, cheese, fish, bread, spices, flowers and more on a total area of 18,591 square metres (translated from its German pages). Munich's city portal says the market has been on this site since a royal decree of 1807 moved part of the market from what is now Marienplatz, that six figural fountains honour Munich folk singers, actors and comedians and a beer garden stands among the stalls, and that its market tradition has been in the Bavarian inventory of intangible cultural heritage since 2014. The portal says individual stalls set their own selling hours, that dogs must be kept on a leash, and that bicycles and e-scooters may not be ridden on the market grounds outside designated areas. This record is the market in the old town, not the Pasinger Viktualienmarkt in western Munich.
