Munich Residenz

Residenz München

The Munich Residenz was the residence and seat of government of Bavaria's dukes, electors and kings from 1508 to 1918; the Bavarian Palace Administration runs it, and its Residenz Museum, Treasury and Cuvilliés Theatre are in the palace.

Why go

The Bavarian Palace Administration (Bayerische Schlösserverwaltung), which runs it, says the Munich Residenz was the residence and seat of government of Bavaria's dukes, electors and kings from 1508 to 1918, grown over the centuries from a castle of 1385 in the north-east corner of the city walls; heavily damaged in the Second World War, it was rebuilt from 1945. Today it houses the administration's Residenz Museum, Treasury (Schatzkammer) and Cuvilliés Theatre alongside other cultural institutions (translated from the operator's German pages). Its admission page says tickets are sold at the Residenz museum ticket office and online, that the Cuvilliés Theatre's own ticket office sells theatre and all-in tickets, that visitors with online tickets can go straight to the entrance, and that children under 14 are admitted to the administration's properties only with an accompanying adult. This record is the palace complex, not the Hofgarten beside it and not the companies that perform in the theatre.
