English Garden (Munich)

Englischer Garten

The Englischer Garten is a public park about five and a half kilometres long in Munich, joining the Isar meadows to the old town, created by an electoral decree of 1789 and cared for by the Bavarian Palace Administration.

Why go

The Bavarian Palace Administration, which manages and maintains the park, says Elector Karl Theodor decreed it in 1789 as a park for the whole people, on the idea of Benjamin Thompson, later Count Rumford, with Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell as its principal creator; the Chinese Tower and the Rumfordhaus date from 1790, the Kleinhesseloher See was made from 1804, and the Monopteros was built by Leo von Klenze in 1837 (translated from the administration's German page). It gives the park's area as 376 hectares, or 411 hectares with the Maximiliansanlagen and the Hofgarten and Finanzgarten, stretching from Odeonsplatz far into the north of the city over a length of five and a half kilometres, with about 78 kilometres of paths. This record is the park as a whole; its map point is the middle of a long area, not a gate, and the Chinese Tower and the Monopteros are not separate records here.
