Kraton Surakarta
Keraton Surakarta Hadiningrat
The Kraton Surakarta (Keraton Kasunanan Surakarta Hadiningrat) is the palace of the Susuhunan of Surakarta, in the Baluwarti quarter of Pasar Kliwon, Surakarta.
Why go
The Kasunanan palace of Surakarta was built by Susuhunan Pakubuwono II in 1744 to replace the Kartasura palace, according to the Central Java provincial tourism office, which also names the Sanggabuwana tower among its buildings. The office's page says some areas, such as the king's private residence, are closed to visitors, while public areas such as the pendopo of Sasana Sewaka may be entered, and that visitors there must take off their footwear and walk barefoot on the sand. The same page describes a palace museum with royal carriages, palanquins, statues and weapons; the page is undated and XTOUR has not confirmed whether the museum is open now. This record is the palace, not the Surakarta Sunanate as a royal house and not the separate Mangkunegaran palace.
