Why go
La Concha Beach (Kontxa hondartza) is the city beach on La Concha Bay in the centre of San Sebastián; this record is the beach, not the bay or the promenade above it. San Sebastián Turismo, the city's tourism site, says the beach is more than 1,300 metres long and faces Santa Clara Island, and that at low tide you can walk to Ondarreta beach by a path through the rocky area that separates the two beaches, known as the Pico del Loro. It says Queen Isabel II made La Concha fashionable in 1845 after her doctors recommended sea bathing, and that the beach and bay take their name from their shell-like shape seen from above. The city council's beaches page publishes a weekly health rating of the bathing water at La Concha and the city's other beaches. The map pin is a point on the sand, standing for a beach more than a kilometre long.
