The ruined walled citadel of a medieval capital near Stepanavan, set on a promontory above the Dzoraget gorge and founded by King David Anhoghin in the 11th century.

Why go
The landward defence is what stands out: a 214-metre wall with four quadrangular towers flanking a single arched gate. Beyond it lie the remains of two bathhouses fitted with clay pipes and a civic building of six domed chambers, which served as a mosque in the 14th–15th centuries and later as a church. The fortress stayed in use until the 17th century before it was gradually abandoned. Expect an open-air ruin to walk around, best combined with time in and around Stepanavan.
