Why go
The Mercado Central is a working food market in a modernista hall in central Valencia; this record is the market building. The market's history page says the city council's 1910 competition chose a design by Alejandro Soler March and Francisco Guardia Vial, that the building was finished in 1928 by Enrique Viedma and Ángel Romaní, and that it was inaugurated on 23 January 1928. The same page describes domes of iron, glass and ceramics topped by parrot and fish weathervanes, and says the market stands on the square beside the Lonja de la Seda and the Church of the Santos Juanes. The market's FAQ lists 259 stalls, 244 of them selling food, and says orders can also be placed through its website. Trading days and hours are set by the market and can change, so check its site before you go.
