Monreale Cathedral (Duomo di Monreale) is the Norman cathedral of the Archdiocese of Monreale, in the town of Monreale, Sicily, with mosaics covering its interior.

Why go

Monreale Cathedral, the basilica of Santa Maria Nuova, is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Monreale and a parish church, in the comune of Monreale, which is separate from Palermo. The archdiocese's history page says King William II had the abbey complex built from 1174 and that its mosaics, probably made between 1180 and 1190 by Byzantine mosaicists working with other craftsmen, cover the interior; the cathedral's own site gives 1172 as the year William II decided to build it. The cathedral's site says the south transept holds the tombs of William I and William II, and that the Diocesan Museum is entered from the right transept. The archdiocese's cathedral page says visits are not allowed during services and that groups and schools book visits through duomomonreale.com. This record is the cathedral church, not the wider complex with the cloister and the royal palace.
