Palazzo dei Normanni (Royal Palace of Palermo)
Palazzo dei Normanni · Palazzo Reale di Palermo
Palazzo dei Normanni, the Royal Palace of Palermo, is the seat of the Sicilian Parliament and contains the Cappella Palatina; the Fondazione Federico II opens its monumental complex to visitors.
Why go
Palazzo dei Normanni, which the Fondazione Federico II calls the Royal Palace of Palermo, is the seat of the Sicilian Parliament and, in the Fondazione's words, the heart of the Arab-Norman itinerary, with the Cappella Palatina inside it. The Fondazione notes that the serial site 'Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale' was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on 3 July 2015. Its visit page sells a ticket for the palace's monumental complex that covers the Cappella Palatina, the Royal Apartments and the Royal Gardens on some days of the week and only the chapel and gardens on others. It warns that the complex, as seat of the Sicilian Parliament, and the chapel may close fully or partly, or change hours, without notice for institutional or religious reasons, and that scheduled restoration in the chapel is changing opening times and may close some areas. This record is the palace; the Cappella Palatina has its own record.
