New Palace (Potsdam)

Neues Palais

The New Palace (Neues Palais) is the palace at the western end of the main promenade in Sanssouci Park, Potsdam, which the SPSG describes as the last royal residence Frederick the Great had built in his park, after the Seven Years' War; the SPSG runs it.

Why go

The SPSG, which runs it, describes the New Palace as the last royal residence Frederick the Great had built in Sanssouci Park, a demonstration of the Prussian state's power and wealth after the Seven Years' War (1756–63); Frederick rarely stayed there, and it served mostly for guest apartments and celebrations, while William II, the last German emperor, later used it as his family's preferred residence. The SPSG lists banquet halls, galleries, royal suites and a Baroque palace theatre in the southern wing among its interiors. Its page says visits are bound to fixed admission times, that same-day tickets are sold at the visitor centres at the Historic Windmill and at the New Palace, and that it recommends buying tickets online in advance because the number per day is limited. This record is the New Palace, not Sanssouci Palace, which is a separate record.
