Okatse Canyon

A narrow limestone canyon in Khoni municipality with a metal walkway pinned to the cliff, reached from a visitor centre near the village of Zeda Gordi.

Why go

The canyon is cut by the Satsikvilo river and is narrow in the way that makes a place worth building a walkway through — between three and sixteen metres wide, with walls falling twenty to a hundred metres. The walkway is 780 metres of metal path fixed to the rock, and the appeal is straightforwardly the position: you are out over the drop rather than looking at it from a viewpoint. It is a managed site rather than a wild one. You start at the visitor centre near Zeda Gordi, and there is a walk of roughly half an hour, or a short drive, before the walkway itself begins — which is the part people underestimate when they budget an hour for the whole thing. Most itineraries pair it with Kinchkha Waterfall a few kilometres away.

Getting there

The route runs from Kutaisi towards Zeda Gordi — around fifty kilometres by road, though only twenty-five in a straight line. Everything starts at the visitor centre: from there it is about a half-hour walk, or a two-kilometre drive, to the walkway. Minibuses run from Kutaisi as well as private cars.

Best time to visit

Late spring through early autumn, when the walkway is comfortable and the light reaches into the canyon.

A managed mountain site: winter conditions affect both the access road and the walkway, and arrangements vary with the season.

Safety

The walkway is a fixed structure with railings, but it is high, open and metal — it is slick in rain and unnerving if you dislike exposure. The half-hour approach is on an unpaved path.

Public transport

Minibuses run from Kutaisi. Check the return timing before setting out — the last one back is the constraint on this trip, not the walk.
