Olympic Park (Munich)
Olympiapark
The Olympiapark is the 85-hectare park on the Oberwiesenfeld in northern Munich, built for the 1972 Summer Olympics, with the Olympic Stadium, the Olympic Hall and the Olympic Tower; Olympiapark München GmbH operates it.
Why go
Munich's city portal says the park was planned and built, with most of its structures, for the 1972 Summer Olympics on the Oberwiesenfeld, which was a commercial airport until 1938 and was later used in part as a dump for bomb rubble; the contract for the facilities went to the architects Behnisch & Partner, the Olympic Stadium's tent roof is by Frei Otto, and the green spaces were designed mainly by the landscape architects Günther Grzimek, Wolfgang Miller and Hans Lutz. The site is operated by Olympiapark München GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of the City of Munich, which describes it as an event centre and a sports and leisure park, with open-air events in the stadium and concerts in the Olympic Hall. The city portal, read on 9 October 2026, says the Olympic Tower is closed until 2027 for renovation. This record is the park as a whole; its map point is the middle of a large area, not an entrance, and the stadium, the Olympic Tower and the 1972 Games are not this record.
