Why go

Palamidi is a fortress the Venetians completed in 1714 on a 216 m hill east of Akronafplia, above Nafplio, built, Hellenic Heritage says, as a system of mutually supporting bastions, each of its eight bastions with its own name. After independence it became a prison; Hellenic Heritage repeats the story that Theodoros Kolokotronis was held in a rock-cut dungeon in 1834 but adds that recent studies show he was probably held in the Miltiades bastion instead. Visit Greece says there is road access to the entrance as well as the stepped path; Hellenic Heritage says the path from Arvanitia has 999 steps, while Visit Greece says they number 857 in reality. Hellenic Heritage lists the Ephorate of Antiquities of Argolida as the contact and sells the fortress's ticket through the Ministry's official ticket service. This record is the fortress, not its entrance or the steps.
