Tiryns
Τίρυνθα
Tiryns is the archaeological site of a Mycenaean acropolis with Cyclopean walls at Nea Tiryntha in Argolis, Peloponnese.
Why go
Tiryns is a Mycenaean acropolis whose Cyclopean walls, Hellenic Heritage says, prompted UNESCO to include the restored archaeological site in the World Heritage List; the town was uncovered in Heinrich Schliemann's excavations of 1884. The same page lists what visitors can explore besides the fortification and its underground tunnels: the Western Bastion, the Megaron with its throne room, the lower acropolis and a Geometric-Archaic temple surviving at foundation level. Hellenic Heritage sells Tiryns its own ticket, which is not among the places the Mycenae ticket covers, and lists the Ephorate of Antiquities of Argolida as its contact; the Ministry of Culture's Odysseus page for the site points to that Hellenic Heritage page for tickets. This record is the archaeological site, not the modern village of Nea Tiryntha or the UNESCO property 'Archaeological Sites of Mycenae and Tiryns'.
