Ponte Vecchio
Ponte Vecchio
The Ponte Vecchio is a fourteenth-century bridge over the Arno in Florence, lined on both sides with shops.
Why go
This record is the bridge itself; the Vasari Corridor above it is a separate visit run by the Uffizi Galleries. Florence's official tourism website says the present bridge was built in 1345, probably to a design by Taddeo Gaddi, after the flood of 1333, with masonry shops on both sides, and that the goldsmiths' workshops replaced butchers' and fishmongers' shops in 1593. The same page says the Vasari Corridor, built in 1565 to link Palazzo Vecchio and Palazzo Pitti through the Uffizi, runs above the shops, and that this was the only Florentine bridge left intact during the Nazi retreat in August 1944.
