Palazzo Pitti

Palazzo Pitti

Palazzo Pitti is a former Medici grand-ducal palace beyond the Arno in Florence that now houses museums run by the Gallerie degli Uffizi.

Why go

This record is the palace and the museums inside it; the Boboli Gardens behind it are a separate record. The Uffizi Galleries' page says the banker Luca Pitti began the palace in the mid-1400s at the foot of the Boboli hill beyond the Arno, that it was bought in 1550 and chosen by Cosimo I de' Medici as the grand-ducal residence, and that the Habsburg-Lorraine and Savoy courts later lived there. It names the museums by floor: the Treasury of the Grand Dukes and the Museum of Russian Icons on the ground floor, the Palatine Gallery and the Imperial and Royal Apartments on the first floor, and the Gallery of Modern Art and the Museum of Costume and Fashion on the second. The operator sells a named single ticket for the palace collections, bought on the day or in advance, and a combined Pitti and Boboli ticket. The same page lists temporary room closures, so check its notices before you go.
