Why go

La Almudaina is a royal palace in Palma, opposite the cathedral, listed among Patrimonio Nacional's sites. Patrimonio Nacional's page says the castle was built between 1305 and 1314 for James II on a site settled since Roman times, that traces of the earlier Arab citadel survive in its layout, and that it is today the official residence of the King during visits to Mallorca. The page names the Courtyard of Honour, where official receptions of the Royal Family are held, the Arab baths and the Gothic Hall among its spaces. It gives the visitor access as Palau Reial s/n, in front of the cathedral, and lists days when the palace closes for official acts or local holidays, so check Patrimonio Nacional's page before you go. This record is the palace; Palma Cathedral is a separate record.
