Schönbrunn Palace

Schloss Schönbrunn

Schönbrunn Palace is the former imperial summer residence of the Habsburgs in Vienna's Hietzing district, whose state and private rooms are shown to visitors by Schloß Schönbrunn Kultur- und Betriebsges.m.b.H.

Why go

Schönbrunn Palace, at Schönbrunner Schloßstraße 47 in Hietzing, grew from the hunting lodge that, according to the palace's history page, Emperor Leopold I commissioned from Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach at the end of the 17th century into an imperial residence during the 18th; under Maria Theresa it became the focus of court life as the imperial summer residence. The same page says the palace passed to the Republic of Austria in 1918 and has been administered since 1992 by Schloss Schönbrunn Kultur- und Betriebsges.m.b.H., a company solely owned by the Republic, and that it was put on the UNESCO World Heritage List in December 1996. Visitors see the imperial state and private rooms. The palace's website says genuine tickets are sold online only at imperialtickets.com, strongly recommends booking online in advance and says visits without prior booking cannot be guaranteed. This record is the palace building and its rooms, not the palace park, the zoo, the Gloriette or the Carriage Museum.
