Scuola Grande di San Rocco

Scuola Grande di San Rocco

The Scuola Grande di San Rocco is the seat of a lay confraternity in Venice's San Polo district, with a cycle of paintings by Tintoretto in its halls.

Why go

This record is the Scuola Grande building on Campo San Rocco, not the Church of San Rocco, which the confraternity's site lists as a separate building with its own opening times. The confraternity's site says the Scuola Grande di San Rocco is a lay confraternity founded in 1478 that built a new monumental headquarters and engaged Tintoretto to decorate it with episodes from the Old and New Testaments, and that over 60 paintings remain in their original setting. It also says the confraternity is still active and is the only one of the historic Scuole Grandi to have survived the fall of the Republic. The site says entry fees are contributions to the restoration and upkeep of the Scuola and its church and to the confraternity's charitable work. Opening days and hours are set by the Scuola, so check its site before you go.
