St. Lorenz

St. Lorenz is the Gothic Lutheran parish church on Lorenzer Platz in Nuremberg, begun around 1250, with a hall choir built from 1439.

Why go

The Lutheran parish of St. Lorenz dates the start of building to around 1250, a first completion to 1370/80 and the towers to about 1400, and says the hall choir was begun in October 1439 and finished in 38 years. It says the Reformation was introduced in Nuremberg in 1525 without iconoclasm, so the church's artworks and altars survived, and that from the first year of the Second World War the church's art treasures were removed to safe storage, so almost all of them survived, although bombs hit the church several times from 1943 to the end of the war. The parish names Veit Stoss's Annunciation (Engelsgruß) among the church's artworks. Its visit page sets regular visiting times, says services, concerts and other events take place outside them, and offers church and tower tours. This record is St. Lorenz, not St. Sebaldus or other churches of the same name.
