Tha Phae Gate
ประตูท่าแพ
Tha Phae Gate is a city gate of Chiang Mai, in Mueang Chiang Mai District, whose present structure the Fine Arts Department says was renovated as a city landmark around 1986-1987.
Why go
The Fine Arts Department lists Chiang Mai's city wall and moat on all four sides as registered ancient monuments, first built in 1296 (BE 1839) and restored in the Lanna and Rattanakosin periods, and says the brick wall and moat in Phra Sing and Si Phum subdistricts were restored and rebuilt. Its 7th Regional Office reported that the Tha Phae Gate inscription, written in Lanna Dhamma script and read as a city-gate post (Inthakhin), was moved around 1986-1987 during works that renovated the gate as a Chiang Mai landmark, and was found on 1 November 2023 still standing inside the structure of the present gate. This record is the gate structure, not the square in front of it, the wall as a whole or the moat.
