Wiang Kum Kam
เวียงกุมกาม
Wiang Kum Kam is the archaeological site of an ancient town in Saraphi District south-east of Chiang Mai, where the Fine Arts Department has a historical park project office.
Why go
The national tourism directory says Wiang Kum Kam is an ancient town founded by King Mangrai in 1286 (BE 1829), who had a moat dug on all four sides, that it was the first capital of Lanna for about 12 years before Chiang Mai was founded, and that a great flood of the Ping River later buried it under sediment. It says about 20 sites were found in and around the town, some of them ruins and some temples with resident monks, and it describes ten visitor points, among them Wat Chang Kham (Kan Thom) and Wat Chedi Liam (Ku Kham). A notice from the Fine Arts Department's 7th Regional Office names a Wiang Kum Kam Historical Park project office in Tha Wang Tan subdistrict, Saraphi. This record is the site of the ancient town as a whole, not any one temple in it.
