Bangkok

Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and also one of its first-level administrative divisions, a special administrative area. The Grand Palace's official website says the capital was moved in 1782 to the left bank of the Chao Phraya River, where the palace was built; XTOUR maps the Grand Palace, the Bangkok National Museum, the National Museum of Royal Barges and the Giant Swing in the city.

This explainer sets out what official Thai sources say about each, how their dates are fixed and announced, and what had not been announced when XTOUR last checked, on 9 October 2026.

Thai temple and Grand Palace rules: what official bodies actually publish

What a visitor may wear at a Thai temple depends on whose text is being read. This page sets out the four official texts XTOUR could read: the Bureau of the Royal Household's 2024 regulation for the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, the palace website's dress list, Wat Pho's own visitor tips and the Tourism Authority of Thailand's 2018 etiquette advice, and shows where they disagree.
