The National Gallery is the Fine Arts Department's national art museum at 4 Chao Fa Road, Phra Nakhon, Bangkok, beside the Phra Pin Klao Bridge, showing traditional Thai and contemporary art.
Why go
The Fine Arts Department's page for the National Gallery says the building beside the Phra Pin Klao Bridge on Chao Fa Road was designed in a Western style by the Italian architect Carlo Allegri and served as the royal mint in the reign of King Chulalongkorn. The department says it founded the gallery there after the Treasury Department handed over the building in the 1970s, opened it to the public on 5 May 1978, and registered the building as a national ancient monument that year. It says the gallery collects and shows traditional Thai art and international and contemporary art by Thai and foreign artists, with rooms for traditional Thai painting and for Western-style Thai art. Opening days and admission are set by the department; check its page before you go.
