พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ พระนคร
The Bangkok National Museum is the Fine Arts Department's national museum of archaeology and art at 4 Na Phra That Road, in the grounds of the former Front Palace (Wang Na) in Bangkok's Phra Nakhon district.
Why go
The Fine Arts Department's history page says the museum stands in the grounds of the Front Palace (Phra Ratchawang Bowon Sathan Mongkhon) and traces it to the royal museum first opened to the public on 19 September 1874, a date now marked as Thai Museum Day. It says the royal museum moved into three halls at the front of the Front Palace in 1887, that in 1926 all the Front Palace halls were given over to a Museum for Bangkok, which was reorganised as a museum of archaeology and art, and that this museum was named the Bangkok National Museum in 1934. The museum is now under the Department's Office of National Museums, Ministry of Culture. This record is the museum, not the Front Palace as a historic site or any one of its throne halls.
