Things to Doin Kutaisi

What there is to do in Kutaisi: the major sights, local experiences and the practical detail you need to plan around them.

Things to do

What deserves your time in Kutaisi

Major attractions matter, but so do timing, price, accessibility and whether an experience actually deserves part of your trip.

01

Cathedral and historic monument

Bagrati Cathedral

Built at the beginning of the 11th century under King Bagrat III, Bagrati Cathedral stands above Kutaisi on Ukimerioni Hill and is closely associated with the political unification of medieval Georgia. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List with Gelati in 1994 and removed from it in 2017, after a reconstruction that UNESCO judged to have compromised its integrity and authenticity. Gelati remains inscribed.

Booking: No ordinary reservation is required. The cathedral remains an active religious site.

Accessibility: Road access reaches the hill, but slopes, paving and church entrances should be checked by travelers requiring completely step-free access.

Time

45–90 minutes

02

Historic bridge

White Bridge

The iron bridge over the Rioni dates to 1872 and is one of Kutaisi’s most recognizable urban landmarks. Its name reflects the pale stones visible in the river below.

Booking: No booking needed. Combine it with the Royal District and riverside streets.

Accessibility: The bridge itself is straightforward to cross, although surrounding pavements vary.

Time

20–40 minutes

03

Local cultural landmark

Picasso's Boy and the Kutaisian baptism tradition

A small statue beside the White Bridge references a famous character from the Georgian film An Unusual Exhibition and the local tradition known as 'Baptism as a Kutaisian' — jumping from the bridge into the Rioni.

Booking: See the statue and learn the story, but do not imitate historical bridge-jumping traditions. River conditions can be dangerous.

Time

10–20 minutes

04

Public landmark

Colchis Fountain

Kutaisi’s central fountain is decorated with enlarged golden figures based on archaeological artifacts uncovered at Vani, visually connecting modern Kutaisi with ancient Colchis and the wider Golden Fleece tradition.

Booking: No booking required. It is one of the easiest orientation points in central Kutaisi.

Time

15–30 minutes

05

Historic public space

Kutaisi Central Boulevard

The garden boulevard has long been part of the city’s social life. Georgian poet Akaki Tsereteli famously called it the 'Parliament of Kutaisi' because local intellectuals gathered here to debate politics and public affairs.

Booking: Best experienced as part of a slow walk through central Kutaisi.

Accessibility: Generally easier than the hillier cathedral areas, although individual paving and curb conditions vary.

Time

30–60 minutes

06

Market

Kutaisi Green Bazaar

A working market with deep roots in the city’s social life, selling fruit, vegetables, herbs, dairy products, meat, dried fruit, churchkhela, tklapi and homemade sauces.

Booking: Visit earlier in the day for a more active market experience.

Accessibility: Expect narrow aisles, crowds and uneven or wet surfaces in some sections.

Time

45–90 minutes

07

Historic district

Royal District

One of the best-preserved parts of old Kutaisi, centered around the former royal residence area, historic streets and architecture from several periods.

Booking: Explore on foot and combine it with the White Bridge and Rioni riverfront.

Accessibility: Mostly walkable but older street surfaces and entrances are inconsistent.

Time

1–2 hours

08

Museum

Kutaisi Historical Museum

A useful introduction to the archaeology, history and material culture of Kutaisi and Imereti, particularly valuable before visiting the region’s medieval and archaeological sites.

Booking: Check current opening hours before visiting.

Accessibility: Travelers with specific mobility requirements should confirm current access directly.

Time

1–2 hours

09

Urban landscape

Rioni riverfront and bridges

The Rioni shapes Kutaisi’s identity. White Bridge, Red Bridge and Chain Bridge give different perspectives over the fast-moving river and its distinctive pale river stones.

Booking: Best explored as part of a city walk rather than as a single attraction.

Time

1–2 hours
