Weather & seasons
When to visit Mtskheta
Mtskheta sits in a river valley at modest altitude a short distance from Tbilisi and shares the capital's continental pattern: hot summers, cold but not severe winters, and pleasant transitional seasons. The local variable that matters is exposure. The town is sheltered, but Jvari stands on an open hill with no shade and takes the full force of both summer sun and winter wind, and conditions up there can feel markedly harsher than in the streets below. Haze in high summer often blurs the view over the confluence, which is a reason to prefer spring and autumn if the view is a priority.
Best time
Late April to mid-June and September to late October are the best periods, with comfortable walking temperatures, clear views from Jvari and manageable crowds on weekdays. July and August are hot, and the exposed hilltop at Jvari offers almost no shade at midday. Winter is quiet and can be beautiful, but the approach roads to Jvari and Shio-Mgvime are occasionally icy and views are more often lost to haze. If you want to see the town at its most alive rather than its most peaceful, 14 October brings Mtskhetoba-Svetitskhovloba, the cathedral's feast and a national holiday, when the town fills with pilgrims and visitors.
