Summer heat
The UK Foreign Office says extreme temperatures can affect many areas of Turkey over the summer months. The Şanlıurfa station's record is 46.8°C, and Göbekli Tepe is an exposed hilltop site; take water and sun protection.
Earthquakes and aftershocks
The UK Foreign Office says many parts of Turkey regularly experience earthquakes and tremors, and points to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) earthquake page for current activity. The city's heritage was damaged in the February 2023 earthquakes.
What tourists often get wrong
The earthquake closed all of Şanlıurfa's heritage.
The Ministry's museum portal listed Göbekli Tepe and both city museums as open on 22 September 2026. Harran Archaeological Site is listed as closed because of the earthquake, Karahantepe as closed without a stated reason, and Şanlıurfa Castle as closed since January 2018 for restoration, which is not earthquake related. Check each unit separately.
Göbekli Tepe is a site you walk around freely.
According to the excavation team, visitors follow a set route along a walkway and cannot enter the monument or the excavation trenches. Visitors are received at a separate area and reach the site by shuttle or on foot.
