Acropolis of Lindos
Ακρόπολη της Λίνδου
The Acropolis of Lindos is the fortified acropolis above the village of Lindos on the southeastern side of Rhodes, with the sanctuary of Athena Lindia.
Why go
This record is the acropolis of ancient Lindos, on the rock above the modern village of Lindos on Rhodes; the village is not the record. Hellenic Heritage, the Ministry of Culture's visitor site, says the cult of Athena on the acropolis probably began in the 9th century BC, that the Doric temple of Athena Lindia and the Propylaea of the sanctuary were built in the 4th century BC, and that the Knights Hospitaller strengthened the acropolis walls into their present form. Greece's national tourism organisation says the acropolis is reached on foot by a cobbled path through the village. Hellenic Heritage's official ticket store sells timed-entry tickets for the site and says they are valid for a single entry on the date and time chosen and are not refundable.
