Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes

Παλάτι του Μεγάλου Μαγίστρου

The Palace of the Grand Master is the 14th-century palace of the Knights of St John in the medieval town of Rhodes, restored under Italian rule and now used as a museum.

Why go

The Palace of the Grand Master stands at the northwestern point of the medieval town of Rhodes as part of its fortifications; this record is the palace, not the town walls, which Hellenic Heritage sells as a separate visit. Hellenic Heritage says building began in the early 14th century, shortly after the Knights of St John settled on Rhodes, as the residence of the Grand Master and an administrative centre, and that after damage in an explosion in 1856 it was restored by the Italians in the early 20th century. The Ministry of Culture's Odysseus portal says the first floor displays ancient mosaic floors that the Italians brought from monuments excavated on Kos, and that permanent exhibitions on the ground floor and in the basement present Rhodes from the 4th century AD to its capture by the Ottoman Turks in 1522, and the ancient city of Rhodes. Hellenic Heritage's official ticket store sells timed-entry tickets for the palace and says they are valid for a single entry on the date and time chosen and are not refundable.
