Why go

This record is the cathedral church, which its own site describes as the church of the Bamberg Metropolitan Chapter and a bishop's and Catholic parish church; it is not the Diocesan Museum. The cathedral's history pages (in German) say Henry II and Kunigunde founded the Diocese of Bamberg in 1007, that a fire in 1185 almost completely destroyed the earlier cathedral, and that the rebuilt cathedral, begun at the east choir in Romanesque forms and continued in Gothic forms in the west, was consecrated on 6 May 1237; the graves of Henry and Kunigunde made it a place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. The site says liturgy always takes priority, that the cathedral is closed for sightseeing and tours during liturgical celebrations and visiting times can change at short notice, that public tours for individual visitors run daily, and that group tours are possible only with authorised cathedral guides booked through the DoMus visitor service.
