Old Town Hall (Bamberg)

Altes Rathaus

The Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus) in Bamberg is the historic town hall building with frescoed facades that, according to the legend the town's tourism board tells, the townspeople built on an artificial island in the river Regnitz.

Why go

This record is the town hall building; the Ludwig Collection inside it belongs to the Museen der Stadt Bamberg and is not modelled separately. Bamberg's tourism board says the frescoes on the facades use trompe-l'oeil architecture to give them a three-dimensional quality, that a cherub's leg projects from the wall as a sculpture, and that the building houses a rococo hall and the Ludwig Collection, which the city museums say centres on Strasbourg faience and Meissen porcelain. When read on 9 October 2026, both said the interior cannot be visited: the tourism board's page says viewing and access to the interiors are currently not possible, and the city museums say the Old Town Hall is to be renovated and stays closed until further notice, the Ludwig Collection included (both translated from German).
